Case Study - Continuous Online Testing

This latest release of Common Knowledge is specifically architected to embrace Web Services - Java business-logic components wrapped as web services for the development of distributed applications. And with the latest 100% Java release, Common Knowledge can be easily integrated into any of the latest generation of J2EE application servers, such as Borland®’s Appserver™, IBM’s WebSphere and BEA’s WebLogic.

"Managing web-enabled business critical applications is all about working smarter, not harder." Or so says Dr Kelvin Ross, Director of SMART Labs, an Object Connections’ solutions partner.

SMART Cat is a web service provided by SMART Labs to continuously test on-line applications, and accurately report on availability and performance from an end-user perspective. "Incorporating Common Knowledge into SMART Cat enables a number of key features that we know will empower our customers to confidently manage their web applications", comments Dr Ross. "For instance, Vodafone use SMART Cat to monitor and manage availability and performance of their internet billing application. This application is critical to their customer relationship, and when problems are encountered SMART Cat is key to notify Vodafone quickly and help their support staff to diagnose the cause."

"Through incorporating Common Knowledge into SMART Cat we enable our customers to isolate what problems they want instant notification about, we define who gets notified, and even which manager the problem is escalated to if problems continue to reoccur. What is really exciting with Common Knowledge is the diagnosis that we can do to pinpoint probable causes of problems, and to advise the right operations person to remedy depending on the nature of the problem. For example, we can isolate the problem as a front-end web server issue and notify the on-call IT operations support person, or if we encounter timeouts in billing requests we instead notify the billing application support group. Of course problems change, but with Common Knowledge we can change our notification and diagnosis rules as the target moves without one change to SMART Cat itself."
