SMART Cat is a web service provided by SMART Labs to continuously test on-line applications, and accurately report on availability and performance from an end-user perspective. "Incorporating Common Knowledge into SMART Cat enables a number of key features that we know will empower our customers to confidently manage their web applications", comments Dr Ross. "For instance, Vodafone use SMART Cat to monitor and manage availability and performance of their internet billing application. What is really exciting with Common Knowledge is the diagnosis that we can do to pinpoint probable causes of problems, and to advise the right operations person to remedy depending on the nature of the problem. For example, we can isolate the problem as a front-end web server issue and notify the on-call IT operations support person, or if we encounter timeouts in billing requests we instead notify the billing application support group.
